Zen Dog's Yaletown Reactive Dog Training
Reconnect with your worked up and stressed out dog.
When a dog spots something that sends their pulse racing, it’s as if they dive into their own world, leaving you, the one clutching the leash, feeling as though you’ve become a ghost just when your furry friend needs your calm presence the most. All those efforts you pour into trying to grab their attention or putting some space between them and their trigger often end up being futile, and might even add fuel to their frenzied state. This gap in communication can feel quite daunting and lonely.
Dog reactivity is essentially a dog’s frantic effort to manage their personal space against something they perceive as a threat. This usually stems from a cocktail of fear and low self-esteem. In some pups, this reactivity is triggered by a sheer impulsive desire to explore something interesting, with the leash acting as the only villain holding them back.
Life With A Reactive Dog in Yaletown
Embarking on everyday adventures with a reactive dog in Yaletown can transform simple pleasures into Herculean tasks. The mere act of strolling down a lane or having a friend over can become a test of patience. Dreaming of a peaceful beach walk, sipping coffee at a local café, or venturing out for a jog are quickly dashed by the looming threat of a reactive meltdown.
Opting for traditional obedience classes that rely on strict corrections or attempting to divert attention with treats doesn’t really get to the heart of the reactivity issue or offer long-term solutions. What’s needed is a more nuanced and empathetic strategy that carves out new paths and fosters understanding for our canine companions – and offers them a chance to learn.
Your dog looks up to YOU to guide them with confidence and connection. The journey isn’t without its hurdles, but the tools for initiating this transformation are within reach, setting the stage for smoother daily routines and a progressive path forward.

How The Growl Program Works
Growl kicks off with a Zoom session that illuminates your dog’s reactive behavior. We concoct a specialized training regimen focused on desensitization and counterconditioning tailored to your dog’s unique challenges. We also probe lifestyle adjustments (including diet, management, exercise, and enrichment) in this mental wellness overview. The session wraps up with foundational exercises for you to tackle before we meet face-to-face.
Our journey then advances to three one-hour training sessions in the environments where you face the greatest challenges. In each session, we demonstrate how to foster a connection with your dog while also addressing the root cause of their reactivity in socially acceptable ways. We suggest spacing these in-person sessions two weeks apart to allow ample time for practice, reflection, and any necessary adjustments.
Throughout this process, we welcome questions via phone and email, adjusting exercises as needed. Many clients find it helpful to send video clips of their training efforts for more in-depth feedback and guidance, ensuring you stay on the right path even when uncertainties pop up.
