Zen Dog's Commercial Drive Reactive Dog Training
Reconnect with your worked up and stressed out dog.
When your furry friend turns into a baby shark upon spotting a squirrel or transforms into a backyard excavator in pursuit of that elusive scent, it’s clear they’ve momentarily left Planet Earth. And there you are, holding the leash, feeling as visible as a shadow on a dark night, especially when your pooch needs your calm assurance more than ever. All those well-intentioned efforts to distract or create a safe distance during these reactive episodes can feel like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands – often ineffective and, at times, possibly exacerbating the situation. This sense of disconnection can be as daunting as navigating a ghost ship alone.
Dog reactivity, in essence, is your dog’s dramatic way of demanding personal space from what they perceive as a looming threat. It’s often rooted in a cocktail of fear and insecurity. In some pups, this reactivity sprouts from an impulsive frustration, akin to a Tasmanian devil on-leash, thwarted by the leash’s unyielding grip.
Life With A Reactive Dog on Commercial Drive
Embarking on daily adventures with a reactive dog by your side can make even the simplest tasks feel like climbing Everest. Imagine trying to enjoy a serene stroll down the street, inviting friends over for dinner, or basking in the joy of a beach walk. Dreaming of a peaceful coffee catch-up at a local cafe or a rejuvenating trail run becomes a distant fantasy, overshadowed by the dread of a potential reactive outburst from your canine companion.
Traditional obedience classes, steeped in harsh corrections, or the old trick of distraction with treats, fall short of addressing the emotional whirlwind behind your dog’s reactive behaviors. They fail to offer the sustainable tools needed for long-term behavior modification. Instead, a more nuanced and empathetic approach is required, one that paves new pathways and fosters a deeper understanding for your struggling four-legged friend – and offers them space to learn and grow.
Your dog looks to you to be an enlightened and intentional leader, someone who can instill confidence and forge a stronger bond. The journey isn’t a walk in the park, but the toolbox is within reach to start the process, aiming to transform those walks and daily routines from stress-inducing to progress-making experiences.
What Reactive Dog Training Looks Like

The Growl course lays out customized protocols and exercises that soothe and rebuild the connection.
The Growl course delves into the nitty-gritty of fear, reactivity, and frustration, all while acknowledging and adapting to your physical capabilities and past experiences with dogs. How The Growl Program Works
Growl kicks off with a Zoom session to help you decode your dog’s reactive behaviors within the broader context of reactivity. We craft a specialized training plan focused on desensitization and counterconditioning protocols that directly address your dog’s specific challenges. We also delve into lifestyle adjustments (including diet, management, exercise, and enrichment) in this mental wellness overview. The session wraps up with foundational exercises for you to practice before our first face-to-face meeting.
We then progress to three one-hour training sessions on the front lines – right where you and your dog need it most. In each session, we demonstrate how to forge a deeper connection with your dog, channeling the underlying motivation behind their reactivity into more socially acceptable behaviors. We suggest spacing these in-person sessions two weeks apart, providing ample time for practice, reflection, and necessary adjustments.
Throughout this journey, we encourage an open line of communication through phone and email, allowing us to tweak exercises as needed. Many of our clients find it helpful to send video clips of their training endeavors for more detailed feedback and guidance, ensuring we stay on course and address any concerns as they arise.
